The fire started as a result of roofing work in the summer holidays - 10 days before Tom was due to take over as the new head teacher.
He said: “I was phoned and told there was an issue on the roof that had been resolved. Halfway to school it was clear from the enormous plume of smoke that wasn’t the case.”
Strong winds had blown embers on to adjacent buildings, causing the fire to spread quickly and Tom said: “I arrived to find the school ablaze. We lost 80 per cent of the buildings.”
